The Threefold Law

Or as others may call it the Law of Return. Some will believe that three fold law means what ever you do it will come back to you three times as strong but this isn’t the case. The Three Fold Law is a description of what happens when you make an action, whether within a spell or out of it.
It all rides on the belief that everything is interconnected, which is a largely accepted idea, even by non-Wiccans, that is why the phrase ‘What goes around comes around’ is so popular.

The Threefold law explained.

If you take into account that everything is interconnected then it is easy to see why your actions may affect everything within the entire cosmos, no matter how large or small the result.
If you are familiar with the Butterfly affect then you can see one of the reasons why this is so important. The Butterfly affect is the theory that energy moved in one location (by weather, people’s actions like explosions, fast movement, or a tremble ect) will cause a ripple over everywhere else unless that ripple is counteracted. This could mean the splashing of a child in the sea on one side of the world could cause a tidal wave on the other side. Wicca sometimes uses this theory to help explain the reasons why we believe that everything is interconnected and why the consequences may be dire.

When doing a spell the Threefold Law needs to be taken into great consideration even thought the actions of the Wiccan begin in their mind. Even though the ceremony truly begins and ends in the mind if the Wiccan does a spell then that is the manipulation of energy within the physical world and this can cause the Butterfly affect, but it also has far more going on then one may realize.

The Path of Interconnection

Where does the path start and end? Well it starts with you and ends with you. Interconnection has been a strong belief for thousands of years which is why nearly every culture will represent this idea into their art or lifestyle, from the snake eating its own tail to the solid gold wedding ring that will never end. It shows a constant flow that never breaks or ends.

One way to imagine it is in the form of string. Where you are sitting right now imagine that countless threads of string are leaving your body and connecting to every object within that room, whether it’s to the smallest bread crumb to the largest wardrobe or door, then imagine a string going from that to something else, and then from that to yet another object until everything you see is connect in every way possible. This is interconnection and if you followed one of those strings it would eventually come back to you.

Many Wiccans will imagine it like a ring. You are at one end of the ring and right around the other side of the ring is the Deity, or Divine. Everything you do goes through the Deity, evolving it and influencing it by the things you have learnt or experienced and eventually coming back out to meet you once again. So now, with this is mind it is easy to see why anything negative you do will always come back to haunt you.

But What Does the Threefold Law actually mean?

Instead of thinking the Threefold Law means what you send out will come back three times as strong, see it like this. Whatever energy you send out, whether by actions or spell-casting, your essence:

-Remains in the Self.
-Is a part of the energy being sent.
-is in the outcome.

So What About Hexing?

It is common belief by those fed by the media that Wiccans enjoy a good hexing now and again when, if someone actually took the time to look, the core principles of Wicca show why a Wiccan would very well wish to stay as far from a Hex spell as possible.

Sometimes a Wiccan will feel they have no choice but to make a negative action to ultimately help a situation and will take on board the risks of such an action, so when a Wiccan does create negativity they do it only as a last resort.
Some of the more common forms of negative spell-casting you may see are Bindings and Banishing.

Binding means to cast a spell to restrict another individual, animal or energy (like that of another spell).

Banishing is where the Wiccan orders a person, animal or energy sauce to be gone, to disappear or to return to its original place.

These actions will generally be the only type of negative magic a Wiccan will do and they heed both the Wiccan Rede AND the Threefold Law, understanding that there actions affect everything and themselves and need far more contemplation then most would understand.

Definitely very clear, thank you.

If I were to put together a collection or even Book of Shadows in my gallery, would you object to my linking to this?
